It appears that Mee Goreng (fried noodles) CRC was a notable dish in the 1980s, and the name Mee Goreng CRC is derived as it operated within the vicinity of Penang Chinese Recreation Centre (CRC). It was so popular even our former Malaysia King, Yang Di-pertuan Agong, the Raja of Perlis was a patron for this hawker stall at CRC so hence some people call it Mee Agong (source quoted from The Star). Currently the stall is residing at Kedai Makanan Seong Huat and is operated by the third generation.
Though Penang Mee Goreng is synonyms to Mee Mamak, the mee goreng CRC is authentic Malay style mee goreng. It is a dry style mee goreng with no or perhaps little tomato puree, chili sauce, or soy sauce being poured into the frying wok, resulted a plate of pure yellowish colour noodles.
Having say that, it is the frying that brings out the essence of this noodles. The plate of mee goreng CRC (RM5.00) comes with cuttlefish, chicken slices, tofu, potatoes and egg. It tasted original and good, differentiated itself with other reddish mee goreng that you would have tasted in Penang. I could feel the little essence from the frying linger in my mouth but it is still lacking the impressive factor that would land on top of mind if I were thinking of having a plate of mee goreng.
A plate of green chili is provided and I always like to press the lime on top of the noodles to add on tangy sensation.
A plate of special mee goreng (RM7.00) will come with some extra ingredients such as cucur udang, extra tofu and extra meats. On the other side, if you are a vegetarian or opt for a lighter version, RM4.50 will be for a mee goreng kosong or I call it mee goreng bodoh because it contains nothing other than noodles.
On the other hand, mee rebus (with tomato puree and chili sauce as soup) is available if you prefer a wet version of Mee Goreng CRC.
