Saturday BBQ Night Buffet @ MCuisine, Maritime Waterfront Hotel, Automall Persiaran Karpal Singh Penang
Challenged by the limited space in Automall in Karpal Singh Drive, Maritime Waterfront Suites Hotel is the latest option available for tourists to Penang. The hotel also attached with a medium size restaurant -MCusine that serves buffet and we were eager to try them upon seeing their promotion in Groupon for RM52 instead RM68.90 per pax. It turned out to be a less impressive buffet with a slow refilling speed despite the servers were attentive, energetic and friendly.

There were 6 main courses readily available at the display cookware during the time we arrived but the main dishes ran out within the blink of eyes, perhaps due to the presence of a great quantity of ravenous and edacious eaters. We managed to sample a little of each main courses while mussels, clams and chickens were served some time after the crabs, squids and fishes ran out. Late comers would have missed out those main dishes then.
There main dishes were average and I even tasted some uncooked broccolis. Worst experience was there were a few bad clams which emanating rotten smells after I put them into my mouth. It made me made a trip to the toilet immediately, retched a few times before vomiting. On hindsight, I should have called the server and show them the faulty smell clams.
Grill and BBQ section
Grill and BBQ section was the better among all for the night. However, the quantity served were meagre. After snapping the pictures of the lambs and marinated sausages, we did not even manage to sample one of it. We waited till 9:00pm when the crowd was lesser just to get a taste of the BBQ lambs. Fortunately the lambs were worth the waiting.
The grilled clams, prawns and squid was better after we doused with the sauce provided.
Appetizers and desserts
Though it says assorted canapés but I did not see any assortment other than the smoked meat. Or is it sausages and prawns are considered as one of hors d'oeuvre in Malaysia's dictionary? The prawns and sausages were nicely and creatively displayed though.
The salmon appeared to be thick in size and I heard a fellow patron was requesting wasabi for it. I am not sure whether did the server manage to get some wasabi for the fellow patron.
Give a skip to the red colored strawberry jellies. It tasted like frozen strawberry jam to us.
The fruits section was one of the enjoyable section of the night. We were surprised to find a variety of local and expensive fruits being served, such as starfruits, nutmegs, grapes and red dragon fruits (Pitaya). It would be great if there was jackfruits as well.
The poor ice kacang corner which was constantly with people in queue and the condiments were refilled ploddingly. However, great thing was that they have dragon fruit as one of the condiments!
Half a serving of the mushroom soup could have landed you with the recommended salt intake of the day - 5gm of salt. Have a few more cups and if could potentially land you for a renal failure.
Overall, it was not a really good experience having the buffet here as the refilling was slow and scarce, and the food was not that really impressive. BBQ and grilling corner, and fruits section were the one shine out among others. However, considering the restaurant is still new, we expect more improvement to be seen in near future. The dedicated and friendly staff deserves a credit as well. I witnessed one of the staff patiently explain each of the food to a senior citizen, helping him to walk around and taking food for him.
As a side bar, it was Automall opening day on 3rd of October 2015 and we were lucky to snap a few pictures of the finalists of Miss Cosmopolitan World 2015. They were so gorgeous and it would be great if we had the opportunity to snap a few pictures with them.
