Kedai Kopi Fook Yuen 富源 @ Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

While we love to mingle around in Mamak stalls at Penisular Malaysia, the trend is slightly different in Sabah. Having spent some time in Kota Kinabalu Sabah, Kedai Kopi Fook Yuen at Damai remained the top choice for yum cha session with friends.

Being a Chinese style kopitiam, of course there is no roti canai or nasi kandar here. The yum cha session here are accompanied by food in a lighter version, none other than 2 pieces of bread (roti kahwin) with a cup of cham peng (mixed iced coffee and tea) or teh tarik. Nevertheless, the charm of the bread and drink has captivated the taste buds of many, as people from all age groups from senior citizens, working adults and students cramped in the small alley with plenty of tables and chairs.

The roti kahwin here is a must try. Savouring their signature Fook Yuen bread which is smooth and soft, to the extent the bread will melt naturally in the mouth is a genuine enjoyment. Sandwiched between the bread is perfect balance mixture of kaya (coconut jam) and margarine, which given the bread the name roti kahwin, as in a marriage between kaya and margarine.

The roti kahwin is a true delight of Malaysian food, which I have be missing after away from Sabah for such a long time.

Despite the fact that cham peng is a derived from a mixture of coffee and tea but the one at Fook Yuen is different. The coffee scent is thick, even thicker than some of the kopi-o at normal kopitiam. Caffeine sensitive people shall avoid this at all cost, otherwise you will be rewarded with one night awake.

The milk tea is silky smooth, on par with the milk tea at Hong Kong even.

The first Kedai Kopi Fook Yuen started at Damai, Kota Kinabalu but has since expanded to a few outlets at Kota Kinabalu town. Above picture was taken from Google map as I was too indulged in enjoying the bread and coffee till forgetting to exercise with my camera!

Other outlets in Fook Yuen such as Gaya Street or Oceanus Mall have different food choices such as noodles and dim sum.
