Food Architect @ Lorong Kampung Malabar, Penang

Have you joined the cohort of people in Penang to take a picture with the magical Flying Pasta? If you have not and you are an avid Instagrammers, go to Food Architect at Lorong Kampung Malabar and have one before the trends decline. It seems that the popularity of Food Architect have rose to historically high lately, as shown by the large queue of patron at the outlet even at 9pm. What an uncommon scene in Penang.

The sorcery of Flying Pasta is that the noodles are elevated in the air reeled on a fork, as like magic have been cast, making the noodles fly. Note that only Bacon Aglio Olio and Carbonara are served with the gimmick, otherwise you would end up ordering another plate of pasta just to get a picture. As for what are the magical chants to make the noodles flying, it shall be left for you to explore.

We ordered Bacon Aglio Olio (RM 19.50) with spiciness level set at 2 out of 3. Although we were expecting an aglio olio with al-dente noodles scented with mild garlic and olive oil, it turned out to be skewed to creamy side and overcooked pasta noodles. We should have requested for level 3 spiciness instead as there was no presence of burning sensation. As a conclusion, the flying pasta would be more to a social media gimmick.

If you are looking for a spicy treat, go for their Piri-Piri Chicken instead. The chicken breast meat is topped with fiery peri-peri sauce, adequate to give you some hot burning sensation and spiced up your appetite for the day.

Salted egg might be widely used in Chinese cuisine but it was a rare encounter in Western dishes. Food Architect was creative indeed, utilizing the salty egg gravy to zest up the poultry meat in Golden Salted Egg Chicken (RM 19.90). The saltiness level of the sauce was just nice. Even without the sauce, the tender chicken meat could be just eaten like that as it was well fried, and not to over greasy too.

Porknado

Porkzilla
The burgers at Food Architect indeed tempting. We had a Porknado and Porkzilla (RM 18.50), both bearing a big chunk of pork patty. The differences between the two was Porknado was topped with a piece of cheddar cheese and onion ring, while Porkzilla was topped with a fried egg and shimenji mushrooms. Either of the burgers were our favorites then.

A pan fried fish only best eaten if it was perfectly cooked with flawlessly crisped skin while retaining the moisture of the flesh. While the Lemon Buttered Fish (RM 18.50) here was topped with  pleasant sauce, the flesh was overcooked, losing all the moisture and the fluffiness. Besides, the fish fillet was not encrusted. It appeared to us that the fish was somehow mismanaged during processing.

Though reservation is accepted at Food Architect, it is hard to get a table during peak hours, i.e. from 6pm - 9pm, in particularly a table of more than 4.  It was a mishap for us after the reservation when we were here, though it ended well and being handled professionally by the crews.

We made a reservation for a table of 6 at 9pm, after being informed that any time prior 9pm was impossible, which we truly understand and had no problem. To our dismay, upon arrival and checking with the person in charge, we were told no official record of our reservation had been taken down. I was infuriated then. If you tell us the table is unavailable because previous guests still occupying the table, I understand that circumstances and willing to wait, or the least you could have done was give us a call 15 minutes prior the time. However when you told me the reservation was not recorded, it simply meant that our reservation was taken lightly.

Nevertheless, the issue was resolved eventually. They agreed to prioritize a table for us when it is available and we were happy with the resolution. We agreed they handled the job professionally after the incident, and thanks to their crew for their professionalism.
