Updated January 16th, 2018, Coffee on the Table has taken over Shinese as their 2nd outlet, still serving Shinese's signature cake.
From the exterior, this building looks nothing close to a cafe, with vines grasping on the metal gates and some wooden chairs. In fact, this building named Sekeping Pinang is a lodging house with an attached cafe - Shinese. Despite being an archaic building, the cozy environment here provides an excellent venue for a laid back afternoon. Food served are primarily Western delights, coffee, a range of ice blended drinks, but the highlights would be their very prepossessing desserts.
It is a cafe in the day, and transformed into a bar at night.
When we stood in front of the dessert display unit, we were irresolute about the dessert to be chosen. Everything seemed to be too good to miss. After all the shilly-shally, we picked Garden Cheese (RM 15), a cheese tart surrounded by chocolate crust, topped with berries and apricot then drizzled with corn flakes. It resembled a gated small garden, which was too good to be destroyed with our spoons.
Although Matcha Float (RM 20) is classified as a choice of drink in the menu, we would regard it as a dessert instead. The cup of Matcha has a doughnut serving on top of it, and the wooden board is drizzled with some cornflakes and chocolate syrup. Matcha flavour was slightly lacking to our taste buds but it was alright, and the overall drink sweetness was just right on the level.
The server did warn us that the drink might be too big in terms of calories for our consumption, which he was right. We appreciated his sincere advice but we were too eager to try this Matcha Float upon spotting it over the menu.
Chicken & Ham Carbonara (RM 24.9) was average in taste. Creamy carbonara sauce and Parmesan cheese were used in the cooking process, resulted a rather sticky and dry concoction for our liking. We would appreciate more of the sauce being added so the spaghetti noodles did not taste bland after some time.
Shinise features quite a number of selection in set for just RM 25.90 from 12 - 3pm. When asked for recommendation, the server recommended us Oriental Chicken Burger, citing it is his favorite. Well he was right, the burger was big in size, and the deep fried chicken patty even outsize the burger bun. Although the patty was deep fried but it was done in a healthier way as no much oil residues can be found. The entire combination was alright and much appeasing to our taste.
The wet we ordered was served with a complimentary drink of choice (Cappuccino in our case) and a bowl of tomato sauce. We enjoyed the tomato soup as it has a balance of acidity and sweetness, and the puree texture can still be felt.
