There are countless of amazing Hainanese Chicken Rice stalls widespread across Penang such as Goh Thew Chik and Wen Chang which are easily accessible due to its prime location in town. However, today our food hunt journey guided guide you through one of the neighbourhood location in Jelutong. This modest stall selling Hainanese Chicken Rice in Peng Yan Coffee Shop at the ground floor of an apartment in Jalan Pancur, and has been very popular among the neighborhood since I was young.
The crowd started to pile up during lunch hour and we have to wait for about 15 minutes prior being served. We had a plate of roasted pork, char siew and roasted chicken for 2 people with a promising appearance. The price was wallet-friendly but we could not remember exactly how much it cost.
Roasted pork was superb in the taste with crackling sound upon biting, and it possessed a right proportion of fatty meat to lean maet. The roasted chicken was tender and juicy on the other hand. Char Siew was alright but it was overshadowed by the great taste of both roasted pork and chicken.
Chai Boey here offers a spicy sensation and the sourness was minimized. Amazingly, it comes with plenty of pickled mustard greens for the fiber supply of the day.
Overall, we enjoyed having the lunch hour despite the slight stuffy environment. The price was wallet friendly, not touristy and taste was great.
